Winchester 1-Day Pilgrimage
Winchester is one of Britain's great pilgrimage centres. Pilgrims have walked from Winchester to London, Canterbury and Southampton (and on to Santiago) for centuries.
Walk with BPT pilgrim Dawn Champion to walk a circuit around Winchester - a fantastically dense 6.5-mile route of pilgrim treasures and holy places. Dawn will introduce pilgrimage practices and unlock the mysteries of the landscape.
Our journey will include Hyde Abbey, the place clouded in mystery where King Alfred is allegedly buried. We'll discover historic churches built on the site of William the Conqueror’s palace chapel or even in the upper floor of a medieval gatehouse. We will seek out Anglo Saxon wall paintings and a historic labyrinth called the Mizmaze. We'll also have the opportunity to take part in the oldest charitable institution of the Wayfarer’s Dole of bread and ale at the Hospital of St Cross.
We will also spend some time in nature, in the company of the Hyde stream and River Itchen, among the great beeches of St Catherine's Hill, and through the stillness of the watermeadows. We finish our journey with the magnificent Winchester Cathedral, with the evocative Antony Gormely sculpture and many marvels from its 900 years of history.
Pilgrims may also choose to stay on for an optional Evensong at 5.30pm, or grab a ticket for the concert performance of Handel's Messiah at 7.30pm.
Pilgrimage is a Bring your own Beliefs practice and will include:
- New ways of meeting holy places (bring your own beliefs!)
- Pilgrim songs, stories and folklore on the path
- Opportunities for silence, barefoot walking and wildwater drinking
- Rediscovering your place in the British pilgrimage tradition
- Natural beauty and the wild places between the roads
