The Way of Blessed Cyprian Tansi, Nottingham - 26 miles, 2-3 days

A mostly flat route beside canals and rivers and through farmland from Nottingham to the Shrine of the Blessed Cyprian Tansi

Beatified in 1998, Michael Iwene Tansi was a Nigerian priest who was based at Mount St Bernard Abby in Coalville, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1835. This was a Trappist monk community which originated in France, where they were dispossessed a number of times over the centuries. From France they also went to Ireland and founded the Mount Melleray Abbey and it was from here that a small contingent came to England to build Mount St Bernard Abbey, the first permanent monastery since the Reformation.

The route starts at the Catholic Cathedral of St Barnabas in Nottingham, a Gothic style building which still retains some of the unmistakeable features of its original architect, Pugin, one of Britain's finest church architects. Follow the Beeston Canal out of the city, and then a mixture of canal towpaths, river walks and long distance footpaths bring the pilgrim to the Church of St Francis of Assissi in Long Eaton and then onto the second Pugin church on this route, the Church of St Winifrede in Shepshed.
