St Philomena's Way, Shrewsbury to The Wirral - 81 miles, 8 days
A long pilgrimage starting in the Catholic Diocese of Shrewsbury honouring the 4th Century martyr, St Philomena
The journey starts at the historic Catholic Cathedral in Shrewsbury which showcases the signature Gothic style of the original architect, Augustus Pugin who designed so many of the important Catholic churches in the Midlands as well as some interior design within the Houses of Parliament. Pugin died suddenly before the work was complete but despite being still a teenager, his son finished the project.
The destination is the Shrine of St Philomena, the patron saint of babies, infants and youth, in New Brighton, on the Wirral Peninsula.
The route uses sections of a number of long distance footpaths, as well as the tow path of the Shropshire Union Canal and the King Charles III English coast path. There is also some suburban walking as it passes through some larger centres such as Chester and Birkenhead.

Pilgrimage by foot is connected with places and landscape, and how those places make you feel. Read about holy places.
At the British Pilgrimage Trust, we believe a pilgrimage should be made on an individual’s own terms. We are founded on the principle that we can all bring our own beliefs to the journey, accessible and welcoming to all.
