St Cuthbert Mayne Way

St Cuthbert Mayne Way, Plymouth - 36 miles, 3 days
From the naval port of Plymouth, travel inland to Launceston, home of the St Cuthbert Mayne shrine
Born in 1543 in Devon, Cuthbert Mayne was first an Anglican clergyman before converting to Catholicism. Following the Reformation, he refused to accept the monarch as head of the Church of England and so was brutally put to death in 1577 aged just 34 years. He has now been recognised at one of the Forty Martyrs acknowledged by the Pope in 1970. Today there is a shrine in the Church of St Cuthbert Mayne in Launceston which is said to hold a relic of his skull.
The journey to the shrine from Plymouth involves something of a rolling path with plenty of climbs and descents but also quite unusually, two river crossings - one is a ford and the second requires a short train trip.

Pilgrimage by foot is connected with places and landscape, and how those places make you feel. Read about holy places.
At the British Pilgrimage Trust, we believe a pilgrimage should be made on an individual’s own terms. We are founded on the principle that we can all bring our own beliefs to the journey, accessible and welcoming to all.
