The Way of Our Lady of Fernyhalgh and St Alphonsa, Lancaster to Preston - 34 miles, 3-4 days
An easy flat walk including two cathedrals, many churches and an important Holy Well shrine
Dedicated in 1859, the Cathedral of St Peter is your starting point for this pilgrimage heading first along the Lancaster Canal towpath. You pass the Polish catholic church where mass is regularly held in Polish, as it is in over 200 towns across the UK. Before crossing the M6, the route visits the Church of Saints Mary and Michael, designed by the same architect who built St Peters Cathedral in Lancaster.
Some pleasant farmland walking will bring you to the small town of Claughton and then onto the village of Goosnargh, famous for being home to two 16th century martyrs. Before recrossing the M6 and heading into Preston, the route passes through Fernyhalgh, site of the Holy Well shrine in the grounds of Ladyewell House, an annual pilgrimage destination for people of many different faiths.
The rest of the route is gentle suburban walking through the outskirts of Preston to reach the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church of St Alphonsa, a faith originating in India and practiced by nearly 50,000 in the UK. It was authenticated by the Pope in 2016.
