Chester Cathedral Pilgrimage in a Day

Circular Route

From Eccleston Church – 8 miles, 1 day. Google Map Yellow Line.

Start at Eccleston, head up the River Dee before coming to the ancient parish church of St John (the original site of the cathedral), the Roman Amphitheatre, the beautiful black and white city centre buildings, then Chester Cathedral itself and the Shrine of St Werburgh and amazing wooden carvings in the Quire. Head north from the cathedral to the City Walls and follow the city boundary before coming to Chester Castle. Then cross the river before coming to Minerva’s Shrine, a Roman holy place of rock, now in a city park. Find your way onto the Chester Approach and trace your way along the Duke’s Drive back to Eccleston.

Discover holy places, and bring your own beliefs.

Pilgrimage by foot is connected with places and landscape, and how those places make you feel. Read about holy places.

At the British Pilgrimage Trust, we believe a pilgrimage should be made on an individual’s own terms. We are founded on the principle that we can all bring our own beliefs to the journey, accessible and welcoming to all.
