St Peters Church and Holy Well, Peterchurch
Peterchurch, Hereford HR2 0RS

St Peter's Church and Holy Well dates back to the 8th century, with links to King Offa of Mercia
St Peter’s Church in Peterchurch, Herefordshire, is a historic edifice with origins tracing back to the 8th century, possibly founded by King Offa of Mercia. The existing structure showcases significant Norman architecture from the mid-12th century, characterised by its rare four-cell basilican layout and a distinctive rounded apse.
Noteworthy features include a rope-moulded Norman font and a Saxon stone altar bearing five incised crosses, both reflecting the church’s enduring heritage. The original stone spire, erected in 1320, was replaced in 1972 with a fiberglass replica due to structural concerns, marking a unique adaptation in church restoration practices.
Adjacent to the church lies St Peter’s Well (link to location on Google maps), a site of historical and cultural significance. Traditionally, the well’s waters were believed to possess healing properties, particularly for rheumatism and eye ailments. The primary spring flowed through a sculpted head, thought to represent St Peter, into a shallow bathing area utilized by sufferers seeking relief. Over time, infrastructural developments led to modifications of the well, including its integration into the village’s water supply, which altered its original form. Despite these changes, the stone head remains visible, symbolizing the enduring legacy of the site’s therapeutic and spiritual importance.
