St Mary's Church, Slindon
St Mary’s Parish Church, Slindon BN18 0RB
12th Century church in the heart of Slindon offering sleeping space on the carpeted floor or padded pews at the west end of the church
St Mary’s Slindon is a Grade 1 listed building. Its core is over 900 years old. It has a rare wooden effigy of a knight from the Tudor era, thought to be Anthony St Leger. A plaque commemorates the death in Slindon of Archbishop Stephen Langton, principal architect and signatory of the Magna Carta. The church fabric has undergone substantial repairs, restoration and redecoration over the last decade, the funds being raised through events, generous donations and grants. Sleeping is permitted at the west end of the church only, on the carpeted floor or padded pews. Well-behaved dogs are permitted, provided the interior of the church and the churchyard are fully respected.
The church is available for use throughout the year subject to the usual requirements of the church community for worship, including occasions when funerals and weddings take place. Those applying to stay will be advised if church events are likely to preclude or impact on an overnight stay and it should be noted in any event that bell-ringing takes place on a Monday evening and choir practice on a Friday evening. Accordingly, all persons booking to stay in the church building do so on the basis that they are not entitled to exclusive use of the building or the facilities.
