Holy Well, Watnall
Trough Lane, Watnall NG16 1HR
The smallest of sacred stories, such as that at Watnall, offer an interesting point of comparison with grander pilgrimage destinations
Highlights
- 19th-century holy well
This well is almost as modern as the ceramic fairies and pixies that surround it. The first miraculous healing took place here in the 19th century, when a priest baptised a terminally ill young boy using its waters. The boy, who lived in a house opposite, recovered, and the well gained a reputation for healing.
The back of the well chamber looks dry, but I reached a hand through its locked gate and felt a tiny puddle at the front. You can perform a baptism with just about anything if necessary, but this well seems unlikely to be used again in its current condition. I can find no record of the original priest’s name or background.
The gate of the well has a Christian design – a bird descending, in memory of the Holy Spirit descending on Jesus during his own baptism in the form of a dove (Mark 1:10). The houses opposite are now part of a modern housing development. It is still regarded with affection by locals, if its cheerful collection of ornaments is anything to go by.
