Join visionary priest Peter Owen Jones on a two-day journey across the hills.

We all at times will suffer and suffering takes many forms. When we have lost someone, when we have been betrayed or falsely accused, when a relationship breaks down, these experiences are all part of a human journey. They are also in many ways pivotal, the legacy they leave, is this to be one of bitterness, of forgiveness, of love?

Healing from these experiences has its milestones and it very common to get stuck. We get so far but no further. This little two day pilgrimage is about going further, so that we are not held hostage by the pain we have experienced, it does not become the frame through which we know ourselves.

Peter thinks it's important that this is quite a small group so places will be limited.

For those seeking to reset themselves after a significant life event. Perhaps you have experienced the end of a relationship, a bereavement, or another kind of trauma. Reconnect with yourself and find your true path on a pilgrimage offering deep, personal healing.

The Journey

We will meet at Lewes station on Saturday morning and walk from there to Firle where accommodation is in Saint Peter's church.

After breakfast on the second day the route will take us to the sea and back and the day will finish with centring prayer in Saint Peters. There will be time for reflection, for silence and for solace. A reasonable level of physical fitness will be required.

Your Guide

Revd Peter Owen Jones – Vicar of Firle, Sussex, Peter is well known as BBC1’s ‘Extreme Pilgrim’, as well as for his highly acclaimed books. With his extensive global pilgrimage experience, Peter has explored the world’s vast pantheon of religious and spiritual ideas and distilled essential wisdom for contemporary life.

Born and raised in the UK, Peter left school and went to work as a jackaroo in Australia, before working in London’s advertising industry. Disenchanted with the material rat race and eager to follow a life imbued with service and meaning, he joined the clergy in the 1990's. Peter is a patron of the British Pilgrimage Trust and a champion of our drive for churches to serve as pilgrim Sanctuary accommodation.

FAQs

Who can come? Anyone over 18 who needs to find a "reset" for themselves

Is this religious? This pilgrimage welcomes all and no-faiths equally. We operate a “Bring Your Own Beliefs” policy. We ask that all participating pilgrims respect one another, whatever their beliefs. The Rev. Peter Owen Jones is an Anglican vicar with experience of wide variety of faith traditions and pilgrimage in nature. Expect a variety of practices, but you will not be asked to participate in formal worship if you don't want to. You'll be given time and space to engage with holy places as you prefer, and pilgrims can choose when and where they wish to engage with suggested practices.

Can I bring my dog? Sadly not - we can’t accommodate dogs on our guided pilgrimages. However, if you have a registered assistance dog, they are welcome.

Are there toilets? These are available at the start, midway-ish at the Seven Sisters Country Park visitor centre or YHA, and the end of each day.

What is my ticket price paying for, in addition to admission, bed and board? The funds raised from this limited space event are shared between the team at British Pilgrimage Trust (a registered charity) and the charitable work of Firle Church. This enables us to spend more time making it possible for thousands of pilgrims to make pilgrimage themselves by engaging with our ever-increasing range of free resources. For more details about our charitable activities, please check here.

This was my first pilgrimage walk but won't be the last. Dawn was an inspiring guide in so many ways - teaching us, entertaining us and caring for us. It was wonderful to get to know new people as we trod in the footsteps of so many unknown walkers who had gone before us. I had a sense of awe at so many points - for the coastal scenery, the birdlife, the ancient trees and for the buildings that had witnessed so much history. And it was such a lovely surprise to be welcomed with tea in Apuldram Church - so very kind. I am very grateful that I could be part of this day.

The Avebury Pilgrimage was a joyful experience. Guy brought wonder and deep connection to the group experience. The other pilgrims were warm, fun and willing to surrender to this rich experience of movement, landscape, the past and the unseen world all around us. Thank you Guy!

Salisbury Silent Pilgrimage

My favourite part was walking in silence and being able to just concentrate on the purpose of my pilgrimage without the noise and baggage of life getting in the way. Abigail was a wonderful guide. She was thoughtful and brought a calm and sense of spiritual purpose to the day. I absolutely loved the walk.

Glastonbury Day Pilgrimage

Many good moments but two things stand out: Chalice Well and the impromptu singing of a wassail song on the way up Glastonbury Tor, by an apple orchard. It was cold yet rather lovely to do a pilgrimage in the frost. Informed and engaging guide. Friendly and supportive fellow pilgrims. Such a good ethos.

I loved walking through the countryside and the fascinating sights such as the church mill and barrow. The lanterns were lovely too and the Wassail singing and cake were a lovely touch. The arrival at Canterbury was spectacular. It was a lovely day and Dawn is a terrific guide.

My favourite part was Dawn singing to us by Kits Coty - sublime when the sun came out for us at the end of the song. Dawn has a lovely sincerity and her singing was wonderful. Also the Canon’s pilgrim’s blessing In Winchester Cathedral was an unexpected and perfect end to the day

I signed up on a whim without really knowing what I had signed up to, and it turned out to be the most extraordinary, magical day - starting with Guy's singing in the Chapel and culminating at those fabulous springs. The information, songs, chat and group experience were all wonderful. I can't recommend this pilgrimage highly enough - and I also hugely appreciate all the references in the follow up email. Brilliant. Thank you Guy!!

I loved the whole pilgrimage. A day of great connection with people, nature, sacred places, past and present. Also particularly enjoyed Guy's singing which added something special and his commentary. Also the friendliness of fellow pilgrims in the group which was partly enabled by having a buddy and introductory exercise.

Green King Pilgrimage, Windsor

Very grateful for the work that’s being done by all who are mapping the routes and sharing their knowledge. All this while I’m still mobile and can join in with day walks ... I asked for the book for my birthday and it has much in it. The Green King though was more my thing, lower key with lots in nature. I am very keen on sacred water sites (following the work of Veda Austin) so would enjoy more of those if possible. One day walks are really fab. Thank you everyone.
