Trustee with Marketing (inc Digital) experience – Deadline: 31 Dec 2023

Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that the British Pilgrimage Trust achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that the British Pilgrimage Trust has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the executive team to enable the British Pilgrimage Trust to grow and thrive, and through this, achieve our mission.

Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.

Professional Experience

  • MARKETING LEADERSHIP – Will have built and led marketing functions in consumer-facing businesses. Will have expertise in performance and brand marketing across a wide variety of on- and offline channels. Will ideally have a track record of successfully acquiring hard-to-reach customers. 
  • DIGITAL MARKETING EXPERTISE – Will have a track record of building, scaling and leading online acquisition, conversion and retention marketing functions. Will bring a deep understanding of the overall digital marketing ecosystem, including channel-specific best practice, technology and data solutions. 
  • ANALYTICAL & DATA-DRIVEN – Will be highly analytical with a structured problem-solving approach and will be at home with metrics
  • CUSTOMER-CENTRIC – Will have a profound understanding of customer needs, profiles, and how to engage them at all stages in their journey. 


  • Marketing
    • Provide strategic oversight in the creation and implementation of our marketing and communications strategy. 
    • Highlight the opportunities and the risks, in terms of our marketing and communications strategy in general, and in particular to build our brand and overall visibility, whilst driving forward our digital profile and commercial activities. 
  • General
    • Support and provide advice on the British Pilgrimage Trust’s purpose, vision, goals and activities. 
    • Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
    • Oversee the British Pilgrimage Trust’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress. 
    • Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
    • Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
    • Review and approve the British Pilgrimage Trust’s financial statements.
    • Provide support and challenge to the British Pilgrimage Trust’s Director in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
    • Keep abreast of changes in the British Pilgrimage Trust’s operating environment.
    • Contribute to regular reviews of the British Pilgrimage Trust’s own governance. Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
    • Use independent judgement, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect the British Pilgrimage Trust’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party interests.
    • Contribute to the broader promotion of the British Pilgrimage Trust’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.

As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

Terms of appointment

Terms of office

  • Trustees are appointed for a 3 year term of office, renewal for 2 further terms to a maximum of 9 years.
  • This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

Time commitment

  • Attending 4 Board meetings annually. Currently meetings are held in person in central London
  • Ad-hoc interactions with the Director and other members of the team
