The Old Way to Canterbury – A Basic Guide

The Old Way to Canterbury is one of Britain’s oldest pilgrimage routes, leading from Southampton, one of Britain’s greatest ancient ports, to Canterbury, the city at the heart of Britain’s pilgrimage story.

Like the Camino in Spain, this pilgrimage path was almost forgotten. But the BPT was lucky enough to spot it on Britain’s oldest road map (the Gough Map), and after some years of research and groundwork, we are pleased to offer this pilgrimage route to the world.

The full way is over 220 miles long – and even longer if you take one of the alternative routes.

Please be aware: The Old Way is not yet waymarked on the ground, so navigation is via the GPX files provided for your device (or maps and compass, if you prefer).

Good luck pioneer pilgrims! Walk well!
