Inaugurated in 2016 for the Year of Mercy, this 2-day walking pilgrimage between Leeds Cathedral and Ripon honours St Wilfrid who together with Our Lady of Unfailing Help, is a Patron of the Diocese of Leeds. The Diocese is the Catholic Church across and beyond Yorkshire's historic West Riding, but pilgrims of all faiths and none are made very welcome on St Wilfrid's Way!
Our route passes through some of the most historic sacred sites in the Diocese: including the mediaeval wayside shrine of Our Lady of the Crag in Knaresborough; our Parish of St Joseph’s, Bishop Thornton where the upper room of the C18th Presbytery is the oldest Mass House in the Diocese; Markenfield Hall with its Recusant Catholic links; Fountains Abbey and finally Ripon, which was home to the Shrine of St Wilfrid in Ripon Cathedral.
For those who wish to stay for Mass, the Pilgrimage ends at the Catholic Church of St Wilfrid - an architectural masterpiece by Joseph Hansom and EW Pugin.
[NB - When St Wilfrid's Way began, it was the only walking pilgrimage of that name listed online. However, since then, another unrelated pilgrimage (the Hexham leg of the much longer St Andrews Way) has been promoted with the same name. Whilst all may share Saint Wilfrid's blessed patronage, to avoid confusion please note that as events, the two pilgrimages are unconnected and organised by separate institutions.]
